Green Kirkland Partnership is rallying community members for a vital habitat restoration event at Rose Hill Meadows Park. Led by dedicated Green Kirkland Steward Brad, this hands-on volunteer opportunity invites participants to contribute directly to local ecological health through essential activities including invasive plant removal, native species planting, and important maintenance tasks like mulching and weeding.
The collaborative effort aims to ensure this cherished green space remains lively and ecologically sound for generations to come. Pre-registration is requested through Eventbrite to ensure adequate tools and space for all participants.
Invasive Species
This restoration initiative represents an important component of Kirkland’s broader environmental stewardship strategy. By tackling invasive species like blackberry and ivy that threaten native ecosystems, volunteers make a tangible difference in preserving biodiversity within urban green spaces.
The event welcomes participants of all experience levels and ages, with training and all necessary tools provided on-site. As part of Green Kirkland’s ongoing commitment to environmental restoration, this event offers community members a meaningful way to connect with nature while contributing to ecological resilience in their neighborhood.
Meeting Spot
The Rose Hill Meadows Park habitat restoration event will take place rain or shine, reflecting Green Kirkland’s dedication to scheduled environmental work regardless of typical Northwest weather patterns. Volunteers should plan to meet near the parking lot at the park entrance located at 8200 124th Ave NE in Kirkland.
The outdoor setting provides an immersive natural experience, with a portable toilet available year-round for participant convenience. Due to limited parking in the dedicated lot, additional street parking can be found along 124th Ave NE, though participants are encouraged to consider eco-friendly transportation options like carpooling, walking, biking, or using public transit.
How to Prepare
Proper attire and preparation are essential for a comfortable and safe volunteer experience. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes such as tennis shoes, sneakers, or boots—no sandals permitted. Volunteers are advised to dress in clothes that can withstand dirt and provide protection against thorny plants, with long pants and sleeves strongly recommended.
Participants should bring a full water bottle and snacks, along with appropriate weather gear that could include rain protection, warm layers, or sun protection depending on conditions. While gardening gloves are provided, volunteers are welcome to bring their own if preferred. Face coverings remain optional for those who wish to wear them.
Age Groups
The Green Kirkland Partnership welcomes volunteers of all ages with specific guidelines to ensure safety and appropriate supervision. Youth under 14 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult who remains onsite throughout the event to provide supervision.
Teenagers aged 14-18 have several options: they may be accompanied by an adult, be signed in by an adult at the event’s start, or bring a signed youth waiver form. The Youth and Individual Service Agreement can be completed digitally or printed with a parent/guardian signature and presented to the Green Kirkland Steward hosting the event.
Safety Precautions
Safety remains a top priority at all Green Kirkland events. While restoration activities typically proceed in most weather conditions, cancellations may occur during unsafe conditions such as excessive heat or cold, high winds, severe storms, or poor air quality. In such cases, registered participants will receive email notifications.
All restoration sites are located in natural areas where stinging insects, particularly wasps, may be active, especially from May through October. Volunteers with known allergies are advised to carry appropriate medical supplies and inform event hosts of any concerns. Despite these precautions, the rewarding experience of contributing to local environmental health makes this a valuable opportunity for community engagement.
